Project to pump water into poor district
The government is spending millions of rand to pipe clean drinking water to the uMkhanyakude district in Zululand.
The poor district was declared one of former president Thabo Mbeki's nodal development points.
UMkhanyakude has suffered crippling droughts for years, compromising the residents' quality of life.
The project will pump in clean water from the nearby Jozini and Pongola dams to one of the poorest communities in the province.
Bheko Madlala of the provincial local government and traditional affairs department said the project would forever change the lives of the local people.
"UMkhanyakude district is a home to the gigantic Pongola Dam, the biggest strategic water asset in the province.
Yet, shockingly, a few kilometres from this beautiful national asset thousands of community settlements have no access to clean and safe drinking water," he said.
