An Ekurhuleni Metro policeman was killed by an SAPS officer in Tembisa after he shot and wounded his ex-girlfriend's new lover.

Inspector Joseph Megalane, popularly known as Nico, was shot in the forehead by a policeman on Saturday afternoon in the township's Moeding Section.

Police say Megalane had found his ex-girlfriend in bed with her new lover.

Police spokesperson Constable Joyce Setshedi said: "Megalane stormed into his ex-girlfriend's rented room and found her sleeping with her new man. He assaulted her, and when the new lover interfered he was shot in the upper body."

Setshedi said the woman managed to run to the police station where she opened a case of assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Megalane fled.

"The inspector was spotted by patrolling police driving in the township. He was stopped but before the police could get to him, he alighted from his car and grabbed two children who were playing in the street.

"He pointed a firearm at the children and threatened to shoot them if the police arrested him. One of the police officers, however, shot Megalane in the forehead.

"He died on the scene," Setshedi said. Megalane had been a policeman for 13 years.

The new lover was admitted in hospital.

Police are investigating a case of attempted murder.
