An argument between two Limpopo women has resulted in the death of one.
The incident occurred at the Fetakgomo municipality offices in Sekhukhune last Thursday.
But municipal spokesperson Rolihlahla Mmela yesterday denied reports that the women worked for the municipality and said they were visitors. "It's unfortunate the incident happened on our premises," he said.
Mmela said the municipality management had conveyed its condolences to the bereaved family.
Police spokesperson Superintendent Mohale Ramatseba identified the dead woman as Lydia Selebalo, 36. He said the suspect, Dipolelo Nkhomi, 31, had been released on R1000 bail and would appear again in the Sekhukhune magistrate's court on April 17.
According to Ramatseba, the two had a fight during which Nkhomi's clothes were torn apart. He said Nkhomi had thrown a shoe at Selebalo, causing her death.
But an eyewitness, who spoke to Sowetan on condition of anonymity, said the shoe did not hurt Selebalo enough to cause serious injury. He said that during the fight Selebalo had collapsed and was taken to a local health centre, where she was certified dead on arrival.
"The deceased was a longtime sufferer of epilepsy. It is unfortunate that she collapsed while she was engaged in a fight with another person - to the extent that an innocent person might be seen as a murderer," the eyewitness said.
He further alleged that the deceased had instigated the incident by hurling insults at the accused.
Ramatseba said: "At the moment we are just clutching at straws, not knowing whether to charge the culprit with murder, culpable homicide or whatever charge.
"The postmortem results will determine the cause of death."
