The SWD Eagles shocked the Free State Cheetahs at home in their Saturday Vodacom Cup clash to leave the Sharks leaders of the South section, after their hard-fought 38-8 win over a gutsy Border Bulldogs in East London.

And in the North section the Blue Bulls kept on their merry way beating the Valke 39-15 in Tzaneen to take the spot behind log leaders the Leopards with a match in hand. Griquas kept up their challenge with a try in the last minute to beat the Lions 26-21.

Naas Olivier was responsible for 21 of Griquas' 26 points.

While on the subject, spare a thought for the winless Lions, who have lost their last three matches in the final minute.

Western Province kept up their charge with a huge 46-7 win over the Boland Kavaliers, who in a few months' time will have to face South Africa's top sides in the Currie Cup Premier Division with just about the same team.

They struggled against a third-string Province team - in the Currie Cup they'll have to battle the best.

The Griffons, who started off so valiantly before going down to the Blue Bulls in the first round, have since been very average and the Leopards took full advantage of their neighbours' poor form by winning 48-14.

The match of the weekend was probably the Eagles' win in Bloemfontein.

They were 20-16 behind at half time, and it took a sprint from sevens Springbok Norman Nelson on full time, to give them the win and see them return with five points from an away match.

Ricardo Croy kicked 18 points for the winners, while the Free State's four tries and close loss saw them take two bonus points from the encounter.

The weekend's results: Free State 33, Eagles 38; Blue Bulls 39, Valke 15; WP 46, Boland Kavaliers 7; Border Bulldogs 8, Sharks 36; Griffons 14, Leopards 48; Griquas 26, Lions 21. - Sapa
