The death of a suspected thief from injuries he sustained while in detention in Tzaneen should raise eyebrows.

Boccacio Mabokhana was arrested at his workplace in Nkowa-Nkowa for allegedly stealing from a scrap yard.

He was released the following day without being charged. But he was so badly injured he had to be rushed to hospital where he died a few days later.

What has come to light is that the police had acted hastily and had no case against Mabokhana.

The department of Correctional Services - whose duty it is to protect prisoners - must probe the fatal injuries he sustained.

A person's life cannot just end like that.

His family needs answers.
