Out to line their pockets

The grammatical meaning of the word "loyalty" is a display of firm and constant support or allegiance to an institution or person, especially in the face of a revolt.

The defection to Cope, then rejoining the ANC, by a number of comrades is disheartening and flies in the face of the word I have just defined. This word is closely related to the word "trust", which these members lack.

The ANC has committed a grave error in accepting back these people because they can never again be trusted as loyal members of the organisation. I hope this is not a sign of desperation on the part of the ruling party. Their return will create more havoc because they harbour hopes of positions after the ANC wins the elections. They are currently repositioning themselves within the political set up.

The sole reason for their return is the same as that of their defection - clear opportunists who couldn't get senior positions in Cope since they left out of loyalty to Thabo Mbeki because they feared Jacob Zuma loyalists would purge them.

They have shown unprincipled traits, which will further soil a situation that is already polluted in the ANC. I describe them as people who are likely to "Cope" within the ANC. This country does not need leaders who have no backbone.
