Diepkloof has lost one of its pillars and inspiration with the passing of Mankitsing Meselane, 66, on March 20.
Meselane died at Baragwanath Hospital three days after her birthday.
She was a passionate teacher who mentored struggle icons like Tsietsi Mashinini who was her student during the 1976 Soweto uprising.
Meselane was a dedicated member of the Methodist Church in Zone 2 Diepkloof, where she helped the elderly and disadvantaged children.
She also dedicated herself to helping children who could not afford school fees and books.
"She was a humble and caring person who always had a smile on her face, a pillar of strength who didn't want to see anyone suffering," said her daughter Malefa.
Meselane began her education at Henley Primary School in Rockville and went on to Morris Isaacson in White City Jabavu.
She obtained her primary teaching certificate in Thaba-Nchu and went on to obtain further teaching qualifications through Vista and Unisa.
She taught at Itshepeng Primary School in 1968, where she became head of department. Itshepeng became the White City Community College in 1991.
Family and friends said she believed that to educate a child is to build a nation and was dedicated to her work.
Meselane will be sorely missed by her three daughters Kgopotso, Malefa and Makose and two grandchildren.
The service will be held tomorrow at 8am at the Methodist Church in Zone 2, Diepkloof.
The cortege leaves for Doornkop Cemetery at 10am.
