The highest wind speed ever recorded on earth was about 370km an hour. It was recorded at Mount Washington, in the US. But this was an unusual reading on a particularly windy day. Winds even half that speed are rare in the US, but not in Antarctica.

In Commonwealth Bay, along the coast of Antarctica, winds sometimes reach speeds of about 300km an hour.
