The Tembisa hospital nurse who allegedly stabbed a young mother during labour has been suspended.

Tryphina Samisa, 42, is facing a charge of assault with intention to cause grievous bodily harm. She was last week released on R500 bail in the Tembisa magistrate's court.

Gauteng health spokesperson JP Louw said the nurse was put on precautionary suspension.

"The investigations will be completed in 60 days and if there are any merits in her wrongdoing, she will be charged and a hearing will be constituted."

Louw added that the hospital will keep the family of the woman updated.

Samisa allegedly stabbed Hlengani Kuboyi, 20, with a pair of scissors in the face, head, breast, back, thigh and in the leg last Tuesday.

Kuboyi gave birth to a boy and named him Karabo.

Samisa is expected to appear in court on May 15.
