In the spirit of the 2010 Fifa World Cup, the Birchwood Hotel and OR Tambo Conference Centre have taken aboard five informal settlements in Boksburg as part of their social responsibility enclave.

The objective of embracing these settlements is to build crèches. The success story to date revolves around the already existing nine crèches. The spin-off thereof is the employment of residents as caretakers and teachers that are the first people to mould these young minds.

Aimed at giving these challenged and forgotten settlements a new lease of life, the journey of caring started five years ago for Ukajede. Ukajede is an acronym for the beneficiary areas, namely Ulana, Kanan, Angelo, Jerusalem and Delmore.

Birchwood aims to create a proper learning environment for children, provide good nutrition, recruit non-skilled labour from the area with the view to create jobs, support matriculants to further their studies at tertiary institutions and to give them support socially and economically.
