Preaching to hungry people proved so difficult that the Temple of Grace decided to leaven prayer with food parcels.

The church applied to have a non-profit arm to help destitute parishioners in its Krugersdorp area.

It began by collecting money from members to give food parcels to the poor.

Gradually, this humanitarian effort included HIV-Aids training and education, counselling and prevention of the disease. The organisation also refers people with TB to various medical institutions.

Mama Angel has donated food parcels, which the church distributes once a month in the nearby squatter camps.

"Our mission is to assist people both materially and spiritually. We found that when we preached the word of God, people were so hungry that they could not take it in," said Pastor SN Baloyi.

"We offer assistance to those who are abused, we help widows, orphans and single parents. It is heartbreaking to visit these places and see how destitute people are.

"They have lost hope and they are completely apathetic. We hope that our intervention will prevent crime, alcohol and drug abuse, and poverty."
