Former boxing mentor Norman "Knox" Motsoaledi has died.
He passed away after a long illness last Sunday. He was based in Meadowlands, Soweto.
Stanley Sono, the father of local amateur boxing, said Motsoaledi fought in the welterweight division before assisting Solly Selebi hone the skills of Yankee Boyz Club fighters in Meadowlands Zone 9.
Sono said some of the fighters who went through Motsoaledi's tutelage in their amateur careers include Evans "Kid Jaguar" Gwiji and Abram Gumede.
Gwiji lost in his bid for the Transvaal "non-white" super featherweight championship in 1977 on June 3 to Joseph "Skiet" Tsotesi at KwaThema Civic Centre in Springs.
But Gwiji avenged that defeat two years later with a 10 round stoppage at Jabulani Amphitheatre.
Gumede won the Transvaal lightweight belt in 1989 on March 13 when he defeated Walter Mpungose in Eldorado Park. He won the national strap seven months later with a points decision over Aladin Stevens in Johannesburg.
Gumede said: "Those are the old timers who brought us up. They spent money from their own pockets to make sure that our careers took off. My heart felt condolences to his family."
Motsoaledi, who is survived by his wife, five children and 12 grandchildren, will be buried at Lenasia Cemetery on Saturday. The service will be held at Zone 10 hall.
