A survey has found that the formation of the Cope signalled a move away from race-based voting in Gauteng, MarkData said this week.

The survey, commissioned by four opposition parties, was conducted in Gauteng. It found that Cope had succeeded in attracting voter support from across Gauteng's political spectrum. But the party's support was drawn mostly from opposition parties.

"The advent of Cope was seen as signalling a move away from race-based voting. In Gauteng, what used to be a racial divide has turned into a stark socio-economic and lifestyle division," said MarkData's professor Lawrence Schlemmer.

The survey was conducted last year but was followed up this month. - Sapa
