There was drama outside the Hatfield community court yesterday where the daughter of Tshwane mayor Gwen Ramokgopa was appearing on charges of possessing drugs and assault.

Lerato Lephoko, 18, a pupil at the Pro Arte School in Pretoria, appeared before magistrate Christopher Choke, who placed her under a drug rehabilitation programme.

She also has to attend an anger management programme after she bit a police officer on the finger during her arrest.

Lephoko and her five alleged accomplices, a girl and four boys aged between 14 and 17, were arrested for drug possession last Friday.

The other five were also placed under the rehabilitation programme and are expected back in court on June 26.

Lephoko managed to escape the media, who had waited for the family outside the court building. She was brought to court in a black BMW with tinted windows and the car drove straight into parking reserved for court officials and police at the back of the building.

The media was locked out of the courtroom, allegedly by those who had come to support the mayor's family.

While Ramokgopa addressed the media in the parking area, some photographers spotted her husband (LL Lephoko) standing with relatives and supporters in the same parking area.

A scuffle started when the family tried to stop a photographer from taking pictures.

The cameraman, Daniel Born, was allegedly verbally and physically attacked by the father.

"The mayor's husband manhandled me. He pulled me by my shirt and pushed me around. He tried to punch or slap me in the face but I managed to stick out my hand and blocked him.

"One guy kicked me on the legs and I have a bruise on the back of my leg. I have made a statement at Brooklyn police station," Born said.
