'They are taking the bread from our tables'

Joe Mophuthing leads the United Taxi Association Forum, which is against the bus rapid transit system that they say is geared to take them out of business.

"We don't want BRT. We were not consulted about it and we don't know how we are going to benefit from it, except that it will take away our jobs. Its route is along some of our operational routes.

"We cannot agree on something that no one ever bothered to talk to us about as business people."

Mophuthing and his group will protest in the Johannesburg city centre today to drive their point home.

"The taxi business puts bread on the table for us and we will defend it with our lives. We are not going to allow anyone to mess it or take it away from us.

"BRT will affect us all, whether you are a long, local or short distance operator. Imagine how many people who operate between Orlando, Soweto, and Midrand will be affected?"
