Finance Minister Trevor Manuel received a hero's welcome at the Pro Arte Alphen High School in Pretoria, where he launched the "Census at School project" yesterday.

Pupils dressed in yellow T-shirts bearing the word "Isibalo" (count) excitedly took pictures of the minister with their cellphones when he took to the podium.

Statistician general Pali Lehohla said the project "would allow children to better understand" the purpose of - and the process behind - the national population census.

It would also promote statistical thinking, he said.

The project, involving 2500 schools, was initiated by Statistics SA and the Department of Education in 2001. - Sapa
