A house and R100000 cash was what a supposed key state witness claims police promised him in return for implicating Bushbuckridge mayor Milton Morema and two others in the 2003 murder of an alleged hitman.

Calvin Mzimba, 39, of Tsakane Trust near Acornhoek, related how police tortured him into confessing that he was there when Jeffrey Sedibe was killed in June 2003.

Mzimba said he was later forced to become a state witness and told what to say against the three accused to save his butt as well as to receive cash and a house.

Sedibe was an alleged hitman who disappeared in June 2003 and who was a close friend of Mzimba.

When Morema, Luckios Mosoma and Erasmus Makhubele were arrested on April 10 last year they were also charged with the murder of Sedibe.

Mzimba said police dumped him in Middelburg after he told a prosecutor from the director of public prosecution in February that "I was made to sign statements that did not come from me".

The latest twist in the matter had compelled the Nelspruit circuit of the Pretoria high court to dismiss the charges against the three on Wednesday last week - citing lack of evidence.
