Umzinyathi district municipality mayor Mbangiseni Yengwa has painted a gloomy picture about poverty in the district, saying it was at its highest at 68 percent.

The areas that form the IFP-led district are Umsinga, Nquthu, Dundee and Greytown. Yengwa also indicated that poverty was worsened by a huge water supply backlog with 74779 households without water.

The frightening figures emerged on Friday at Umsinga when Yengwa was reporting back to the community about the implementation of the projects during the current financial year and on what the residents can expect in the forthcoming financial year.

Yengwa said that in addressing the needs of the community, the municipality has come up with a concept of Mayoral Projects. He said the projects were aimed at empowering communities to fight poverty and ranged from community gardens to sewing projects.
