Marcio Maximo has extended his contract as coach of the Tanzania national side until July next year.

The Brazilian, who has revived the Taifa Stars, was unsure whether to extend his contract following interest from two South African clubs.

But Tanzania football chiefs agreed to an extended term after an impressive African Nations Championship campaign in Ivory Coast this month.

"They have shown they value me, thanks for that, I promise to work more closely with them, hopefully our football will go to the next level," Maximo said.

"The future of Tanzania football is bright and this is one of the reasons why I've extended my stay for another one year. I want to see Tanzania climb higher on the Fifa world rankings, instead of nose-diving," he added.

The Brazilian has improved the fortunes of the Taifa Stars since taking over the side in June 2006. He has been popular with Tanzania fans after leading them to their first continental tournament in 29 years. Tanzania had not qualified for a major tournament since the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations in Nigeria.

Maximo was a member of Brazil's youth coaching staff in 1992 and 1993. - BBC
