"By planting these trees, I hope to offset this [carbon footprint] and create awareness about climate change," said Zille.
"I am aware that the only real way to reduce human-induced climate change is to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Planting trees to offset carbon is thus not a licence to emit."
Zille planted 39 trees at Jerusalem Park in the city.
"Responding to climate change needs to feature as a top priority of the new government," said Zille.
Meanwhile on Saturday, Zille slammed the ANC for dishonouring the memory of the Sharpeville massacre heroes by failing to implement human rights laws they had died for.
She was addressing a Human Rights Day gathering in Atteridgeville outside Pretoria.
"We can now look back and see whether the government has succeeded in honouring these rights. Our conclusion must be this: while the government has succeeded in honouring some of the rights in our Constitution, it has failed to honour others," she said. - Sapa
