Banana thief dies after spear attack

A security guard allegedly killed a banana thief with a spear in Kwa-Mbonambi, KwaZulu-Natal police said yesterday.

Captain Jabulani Mdletshe said two men had been stealing bananas from a plantation at Nowhere Farm, Kwa-Mbonambi in Lower Umfolozi, on Wednesday night when they were spotted by the security guard.

"When the thieves saw the guard approaching, they began running and the guard gave chase," said Mdletshe.

"He struck one thief with a spear and the 38-year-old man died at the scene."

The second man managed to escape and report the matter.

Mdletshe said the guard was arrested and will appear in the Kwa-Mbonambi magistrate's court on a murder charge.

In a separate incident, a suspected house robber was shot dead during an argument with two men in Kwa-Mbonambi.

Mdletshe said there was an exchange of words between three people at a reserve in the area on Wednesday.

"He was shot in the chest and arm and died at the scene," said Mdletshe.

The two men ran away and no arrests had been made at the time of going to press.

The police spokesperson said the victim was linked to several house robberies and an attempted murder case in the area .

Mdletshe said it was not clear what the argument was about or whether the two men had been his accomplices in some of the crimes. - Sapa
