Anyone who had a housing problem in Vosloorus during the past 10 years would most likely know Sandile David Mathetha.
He spent almost a decade at the helm of the housing department of the Boksburg-Vosloorus municipalities in Ekurhuleni.
Mathetha was born in 1960 in Rouxville, Free State.
He relocated to Gauteng where he worked for numerous companies before he joined the Boksburg municipality as a housing officer.
He was involved with the ANC and was also a Sanco activist.
He had an interest in community, social and youth issues and used ANC structures to advance community welfare issues.
As a community leader he worked closely with the youth and resolved community problems with sensitivity and generosity.
He showed particular commitment to the Freedom Charter's declaration on housing, which states: "There Shall be Houses, Security and Comfort".
Had he taken his activism to a higher level he would have rewarded with a public political office.
His spiritual sensitivity made him aware that God had other work for him. He responded and devoted attention to the work of the church.
He was a lay preacher and leadership capabilities were quickly realised when his church appointed him as a circuit steward in the Methodist Church of Southern Africa.
He had a passion for youth projects and worked closely with young people in the church and in the community.
He died on March 8 at the Union Hospital in Alberton after undergoing a laryngoscopy.
He will be remembered for his commitment to solving housing problems, his lively sense of humour and the sparkle of his personality.
Mathetha is survived by his wife Nobulawu, son Sinethemba, daughter Kholosa, four brothers and a sister.
He will be buried at the Southpark Cemetery after a service at the Vosloorus Civic Centre tomorrow.
The service starts at 8am and the cortege will leave for the cemetery at 11am.
