Zuma to speak at memorial

ANC president Jacob Zuma will deliver a keynote address at the memorial service of slain Rustenburg councillor Moss Phakwe, 53, who was gunned down on Saturday.

ANC president Jacob Zuma will deliver a keynote address at the memorial service of slain Rustenburg councillor Moss Phakwe, 53, who was gunned down on Saturday.

The service is scheduled for Olympia stadium on Thursday, the family said.

By late last night scores of high-profile politicians were still flocking to Phakwe's home in Rustenburg, North West.

After Safety and Security Minister Nathi Mthethwa's visit on Sunday, Local and Provincial Affairs Minister Sicelo Shiceka and North West Premier Edna Molewa led a string of MECs and hundreds of activists on a visit to the family yesterday.

Phakwe's memorial service will be at the Ben Maree Hall in Rustenburg. The funeral is on Saturday.

Tensions between warring ANC factions boiled into the open yesterday when prominent ANC politicians believed to be close allies of ex-president Thabo Mbeki were chased away from the Phakwe home. They included Rustenburg mayor Matthew Wolmarans, ANC regional secretary Mpho Khunou, and MEC for local government and housing Howard Yawa. - Motswako News Agency
