Two senior traffic officers in Mpumalanga were arrested in a police trap for allegedly soliciting a bribe from a trucking company at the weekend.
The two supervisors at the Kinross weigh bridge, Thulani Mokoko, 31, and Jacob Mahlangu, 41, were arrested on Saturday shortly after allegedly pocketing a R3000 bribe from the trucking company.
Police spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said it all started on Saturday morning when the two allegedly told a truck driver transporting coal to give them R3000 to allow the company to overload their trucks as much as they could.
Hlathi said the driver then informed the owners of the company, "who immediately alerted the police".
A trap was then set up after police had photocopied the demanded cash. The money was then paid to the traffic officers by the trucking company. "Little did the officials know that we were watching every step they took.
"We immediately closed in, arrested them and recovered the cash paid to them."
Both Mokoko and Mahlangu appeared in the Evander magistrate's court yesterday on charges of corruption and were each granted R5000 bail.
Their case was postponed to April 13 for further investigation.
Hlathi said the arrests should send a strong warning to other government employees involved in corruption.
