Guillo Marapyane, Softball South Africa's president, was happy yesterday with the turnout on the first day of the national championships at Edenvale sports complex in Ekurhuleni.

Marapyane could also not hide his excitement with the fact that almost all their provinces have sent their provincial teams to the tournament.

Only Mpumalanga could not sent a team, and Marapyane said this was due to the fact that the province only established its organised structure last year.

"I was encouraged to see people who did not have enough knowledge attending the matches today [yesterday], and they have promised to come for more action. This is good for our drive to popularise softball to a wider community."

KwaZulu-Natal got their defence of their major men's title off to a promising start when they beat Limpopo 9-2.
