Vaal Rand police are hunting members of two gangs who held up local liquor stores at the weekend.

Captain Thivhulawi Tshilate said officers have been working tirelessly to find the suspects since the first attack on a bottle store owner and his son-in-law in De Deur on Sunday afternoon.

"The man was with his son-in-law outside their premises when six armed men approached them. The robbers pointed their guns at the victims and ordered them to go inside the store."

A woman employee was inside counting cash behind closed doors. "The men managed to open the door and found the woman inside counting the money. They took about R3000."

The robbers then demanded the keys to the owner's white Isuzu bakkie and his son-in-law's silver Toyota Run X. They fled with the vehicles and the cash.

In Ratanda, Heidelberg, a tavern owner was pistol-whipped when he was robbed.

Tshilate said four armed men entered the premises on Sunday night pretending to be customers. "They approached the owner and produced pistols. One whipped him with a firearm on his head and he sustained injuries," said Tshilate.

The robbers took about R45000 in cash and fled in a black VW Golf.
