"We will table a report to the council. This has now come to our attention and funds would be allocated to restore the cemetery."
Nawa, who doubles up as ANC chairperson for the West Rand region, said budget provisions would be made in the 2009/10 financial year. He said as soon as resources were available, a project to restore the cemetery would startin July or August this year.
Nokwazi Ndlala, infrastructure director in the Randfontein municipality, unveiled an even more ambitious road map in support of the initiative.
She acknowledged that the current state of the graves was an "apartheid shame" which needed to be reversed urgently. Ndlala said the renovation plan would assume a broader approach that would entail:
l Mobilising the people by inviting key stakeholders to a forum with the objective of identifying families whose dead are buried at the cemetery in order to engage next of kin as drivers of the restoration plan;
l The erection of a memorial plaque in honour of those buried at the cemetery, affirming their contribution to the area as the first generation inhabitants of Madubulaville and by extension, as pioneering residents of Randfontein;
l The beautification of the cemetery into a modern memorial park with pathways and water features.
External financial help would be sought, said Ndlala, adding that the first step would be to find the missing burial records before tackling the renovations.
The burial area would then be surveyed and grave numbers aligned.
Patricia Tshitema, the municipality's parks and cemeteries section manager, has been tasked with the duty of retrieving all the relevant information - burial records, grave numbers and getting all the stakeholders together for the forum.
Those who wish to play a role in the restoration of the cemetery should contact Manana Motshidi.
Emphasis is on families whose relatives are buried there.
