Whether taxi drivers like it or hate it, Operation Nomakanjani is winning and here to stay.

Yesterday 23 drivers were arrested for reckless and negligent driving in the Johannesburg CBD.

Among the 23 were three private drivers.

Operation Nomakanjani is a new campaign conducted by the Johannesburg Metro Police Department to curb negligent and reckless driving in Johannesburg.

Instead of the usual practice, where traffic offenders are issued fines, errant drivers are dragged into police vans and taken to police stations where they are charged.

They spend a night in jail before they appear in the Johannesburg magistrate's court and pay R2000 admission of guilt fee.

The offenders' vehicles are impounded and released on payment of a R650 fine.

Yesterday's arrests take the total number of drivers arrested to 160 since the operation began last Monday.

Head of the operation, Sergeant Jack Mabaso, said: "We will not stop until the motorists stop disobeying the law."
