As expected, James "Maradona" Shabangu was on Saturday elected founding president of the Gauteng Sports Council in Johannesburg.
Shabangu, who is also the chairman of Dona's Mates Youth Development in Orange Farm, was elected at Ellis Park Stadium conference centre.
"The sports family in Gauteng has spoken, our mandate is to build Gauteng as the home of champions as part of the 2010 World Cup legacy projects," said Shabangu.
"We will also be working hard to encourage mass participation in sports and transform sport in the province to represent the population.
"Our aim is to build Gauteng as the preferred destination for international sports, we also want to see international games in our townships."
The formation of a provincial sports structure, which will strive to ensure access, equity and redress in sports, was spearheaded by the Gauteng government.
Shabangu said they were grateful for the support of Barbara Creecy, the Gauteng MEC for sports, arts, culture and recreation who assisted in the entire process.
At the same event, the administrative section of the Sports House was unveiled. Sports equipment was presented to the South African Sports Legends.
"The launch of Gauteng Sports Council symbolises much more than the structure that we bring into existence," said Creecy. "It represents the most significant stage in government's commitment to creating a new drive and momentum to the development of sport.
"The Sports House concept in Gauteng will go a long way in ensuring that sport and infrastructure is accessible to all."
Other officials elected to the executive include Bennet Mosebi, Deliwe Hltshwayo, Thabo Deeme and Gert Potgieter.
