Slowly the government is turning its attention to the corruption and outright fraud that bedevil public housing.

Better late than never.

The housing department has called in the special investigations unit, our erstwhile Scorpions, to crack down on crooked contractors.

The contractors have filched hundreds of millions of rands from the public housing programme and have often provided inadequate, poorly built RDP homes.

The SIU will also probe 30000 government employees suspected of being involved in fraud ranging from bribery to taking houses they were not entitled to.

It's been a long time coming, but hats off to the bureaucrats who at long last are cleaning up the mess.
