Top South African men's national basketball team coach Flosh Ngwenya is leaving for Budapest, Hungary, today for an advanced training course.

"Flosh will be away on a three- month coaching course coordinated by the IOc (International Olympic Committee)," said Basketball South Africa president Malesela Maleka.

"The IOC has a state-of-the-art centre in Budapest where they run advanced coaching programmes for sports in the Olympic family.

"They help countries who need help in their quest to qualify for the Olympics. It's going to be a long road for us to qualify but we have to start somewhere.

"Flosh will impart the knowledge to the local coaches on his return because he will be an accredited Fiba [International Basketball Federation] coaching instructor."

Maleka said Thierry Kita will be in charge of the men's team in Ngwenya's absence.

Kita, who has also been doing development basketball coaching clinics on national television during the weekend, is Ngwenya's assistant.

Ngwenya has represented South Africa as a player, including at the World Student Games in Spain in 1998 and China in 2000.

He was not available for comment at the time of going to press.
