The acting CEO of the SABC, Gab Mampone, is treading on thin ice after he was allegedly read the riot act by the board chairperson Khanyi Mkonza last week. Mkonza threatened to suspend him with immediate effect.

In circumstances almost identical to the suspension of group CEO Dali Mpofu, who was shown the door after he had suspended head of news Snuki Zikalala, Mampone was attempting to suspend the chief operating officer, Rob Nicholson, whom he accuses of complicity in the SABC's R800 million deficit.

Mkonza is reported to have bellowed at Mampone, "You dare touch him (Nicholson)... you'll be a goner."

Mampone developed cold feet. When contacted for comment yesterday, a surprised Mampone asked: "Where did you get that from?"

He refused to either confirm or deny the allegation.

The tension between the board and the management has resulted in the first board member jumping ship. Businessman Peter Vundla resigned last Friday, citing irreconcilable differences with Mkonza. - Motswako News Agency
