Ekurhuleni Metro police officers last week arrested more than 500 motorists for reckless and negligent driving and failing to appear before court for traffic offences.

"During the operation four motorists aged between 18 and 48 were arrested on the N12 east, near Alberton, for reckless and negligent driving," said spokesperson Jimmy Maboko.

"They were driving between 181km and 186km/h in a 120km/h zone and were detained at the Alberton police station."

"Also among them was a 33-year-old taxi driver who had 11 warrants amounting to R1850000 against him," Maboko said.

The operation took place between Monday and Saturday last week.

Maboko said the arrested motorists were due to appear at courts today in Tembisa, Kempton park, Thokoza, Germiston, Boksburg, Vosloorus, Alberton, Springs, Benoni, Brakpan and Nigel.

"We advise motorists to regularly check with their traffic departments to see if they have any outstanding traffic fines and to respect all the basic rules of the road."

Similar operations would continue throughout the year, Maboko said.
