The Earth Organisation and Miss Earth South Africa have teamed up for the protection of wildlife in war zones.

On Saturday the two organisations handed a petition to the United Nations. Dubbed the "Walk for Wildlife", the event was held at the Johannesburg Zoo with 250 local pupils joining in the campaign.

The Earth Organisation, a conservation group, operates in 12 countries. Miss Earth SA aims to empower young women to protect the natural heritage. On Friday, 23 semifinalist of this year's pageant were involved in this initiative.

"The UN should treat zoos, game reserves, game rangers and veterinarians as schools, hospitals and churches during the times of war," said Lawrence Anthony, founder of The Earth Organisation.
