Members of the community took the law into their own hands and beat a suspected rapist to death.

Police said angry residents from Lefiswane village in the KwaMhlanga area, accused Jan Mokonyane, 20, of raping a 12-year-old girl.

After the alleged rape, Mokonyane went into hiding, prompting the community to conduct a massive search for him.

The alleged rape took place last Friday.

"And yesterday community members received a tip-off that Mokonyane would be boarding a 5am bus to his relative in Hammanskraal the next day," police spokesman Hastings Chaane said.

"Angry villagers then woke up in the morning and barricaded the road and stopped all the buses, searching for him."

Chaane said they eventually found Mokonyane in one of the buses and took him out and beat him to a pulp.

"The bus driver and passengers could not believe their eyes when angry community members, armed with sticks and rocks, stopped the bus and without saying anything grabbed the suspect, shoved him out of the bus and beat him," Chaane said.

"He died on arrival at the Mmametlhake police station."

Chaane said no one had been arrested regarding the incident and asked that anyone with information which could lead to the arrest of the perpetrators to come forward.
