Miriam Nomathamsanqa Rakwena-Kutu passed away on March 4.
She was born in Hershel, Eastern Cape, on July 26 1931.
She attended London Missionary School and then St Paul's Secondary at Taung in North West.
In 1951 she married the late Itumeleng Rakwena. The two were blessed with six children.
Rakwena worked as a nurse at St Conrad Hospital in Taung. She moved to Dobsonville, Soweto, and then worked for Checkers and OK Bazaars in Roodepoort.
She later married the late Tshukudu Kutu.
She was active in various women and community organisations but also devoted a major part of her life to the church.
She helped build the Anglican Church in Soweto's Central Western Jabavu.
In furtherance of her faith, she undertook pastoral studies, for which she was ordained in 2005.
Rakwena-Kutu passed away after a short illness.
She is survived by her sister Nomvulazana, children Tiny, Dolly, Boikanyo and Mbulelo, four stepchildren, 10 grandchildren as well as three great-grandchildren.
She will be buried tomorrow at Roodepoort Cemetery. Her funeral service will start at 8am at the Anglican Church in Central Western Jabavu, Soweto. The cortege will leave for the cemetery at 11.30am.
