Not for the first time, there is a media story about Jabu Mahlangu staying away from work. He is not so unique.

Failure to live up to expectations is very rife. It is found as much in sports as it is in academe and in corporate offices. We should as a nation ask ourselves why is it that so many young people with potential to achieve greatness choose less. Are we really a people who have accepted that success belongs to others and therefore live to feed the demons that suggest that to dare and be great is to harbour hallucinations.

Jabu is a role model to many youngsters. But he could also be the poster-boy of what could happen to the millions of youngsters who take their talent and potential for granted.
