Prisoner dies after escape bid

A prisoner who was serving a 10-year sentence in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, died after allegedly trying to escape from prison, Eastern Cape correctional services said.

A prisoner who was serving a 10-year sentence in Mthatha, in the Eastern Cape, died after allegedly trying to escape from prison, Eastern Cape correctional services said.

"The inmate, who was in prison for robbery, was due to appear in the Bizana magistrate's court for trying to escape from custody last year," said spokesperson Zama Feni yesterday.

He said the man was being transferred from the Mthatha correctional facility to the Bizana correctional centre.

"As he entered the access gate at Bizana at 7pm on Monday, he got off the vehicle he was being transported in and tried to run away ... but correctional officials managed to recapture him despite his resistance."

On Tuesday morning the inmate complained of body pains and was taken to a local hospital where he died.

Feni said the regional commissioner, Nontsikelelo Jolingana, would conduct a preliminary investigation into the death.

The inmate could not be named as his next-of-kin had not yet been informed. - Sapa
