KZN honours its football legends

The department of sport and recreation in KwaZulu-Natal has unveiled its plan to recognise the province's former football stars.

The department of sport and recreation in KwaZulu-Natal has unveiled its plan to recognise the province's former football stars.

The MEC for sport and recreation, Amichand Rajbansi said national and provincial governments have taken a decision that the past sport stars be accommodated and not be forgotten. Some of the greats who entertained soccer masses in the province attended the launch this week.

Rajbansi, himself a referee in the heady days of the South African Football League has recognised the immense contribution to football by these icons of the South African game.

"It is sad that as the years roll on, our memories of these grand entertainers of South African sport also diminish, and before they become extinct let us reminiscence on the glory days gone by," said Rajbansi.

The concept of the Night of the Legends has been his brainchild and will be held at the Inkosi Albert Luthuli Convention Centre on the March 19. Awards will be given to the legends that have played for a minimum of three seasons in top flight football in the following year categories: 1950-1969; 1970-1989; 1990-1996

Special awards will be presented to footballers and administrators from the period beyond 1996 to present.

Legends who have plied their trade in the years before unity in the National Professional Soccer Leagues, National Football League and the South African Soccer Federation will also be honoured. - Sowetan
