Help for those in need

Mama Angel is an emergency food project that forms part of Sowetan's many Nation Building projects.

Its objectives are to provide bridging or short-term help to NGOs, orphanages, schools and old-age lunch clubs.

The project provides food, clothing and blankets to organisations in financial crisis.

Mama Angel is active in Soweto, Pretoria, East Rand and North West. The project was initiated as a result of a call for aid to Swaziland and it has since sent emergency supplies to Cape Town, Limpopo, Swaziland and Thohoyandou.

The scheme contributes food to school feeding programmes, Christmas parcels for the elderly, blankets and slippers to hospices, shelter for orphans, stoves for soup kitchens, and provides paint for NGOs to spruce up their offices.

The Mama Angel team goes out once a week to augment the work done by NGOs.

"We have bought school uniforms and shoes for orphans, along with stationery. We also collect clothing for refugees," said Lindi Obose, the coordinator of the project.

"It is easier if people list their requests in order of preference so that we can respond to the greatest need. We sometimes partner with big firms to provide a better response or better service to the community."
