Veteran Sowetan journalist Themba Molefe was yesterday praised for the input he had made to journalism in the country.

Molefe, pictured, who had been planning to open a journalism academy, died last Friday morning at Brenthurst Hospital in Johannesburg.

He was hailed for his passion for the profession. Popularly known as "Bra T", Molefe was dedicated to training young journalists on the newspaper.

A memorial service was held at the Sowetan offices in Industria West yesterday. Sunday World editor and Molefe's childhood friend Charles Mogale described him as an honest and brave person.

"He did not want to be treated in a special way because he was sick. And there is not a single person who can stand here and say they had a grudge with Themba.

Another friend, Phil Molefe, said: "Themba's contribution to the industry must live on through those he trained."

Molefe was also praised by former City Press editor Mathatha Tsedu and Sowetan night editor Horatio Motjuwadi.

Molefe was diagnosed with a pinched nerve, and neurologists said only a fusion could prevent him from becoming permanently paralysed.

He is survived by his wife Nthobe and two sons, Molefe and Sechaba.

He will be buried at Kroomvlei Cemetery in Alberton, Ekurhuleni, on Saturday.

The service will be held at St Phillips Anglican Church in Thokoza, Ekurhuleni, at 8am.
