Classmate (18) knifed to death

Canaan Mdletshe

An 18-year-old Grade 12 pupil from Marian Ridge Secondary in Mariannhill, near Pinetown, was stabbed to death by a classmate while on his way to school.

Andile Mbeje of Mandela village was stabbed three times and died at the scene. He was allegedly stabbed to death in full view of other pupils yesterday. Mbeje allegedly had a heated argument with the suspect the previous day. The suspect is from nearby Dassenhoek and has since fled the area. Police have launched a manhunt for him.

Police spokesperson Superintendent Muzi Mngomezulu said according to investigations, the two pupils had an argument in class the previous day.

"Apparently on Tuesday, the two had a heated argument over school work inside their classroom but other learners did not take their fight seriously. During the argument, the suspect was heard threatening Mbeje, saying he would get him in the morning. Mbeje was stabbed twice in the shoulder and once in the chest," he said.

Mngomezulu said when police went to the suspect's home, they did not find him.

Cosas provincial leader Sibonelo Shezi condemned the incident, saying Cosas would campaign for the arrest of the suspect. "Cosas is against violence in our schools. It turns our schools into unsafe environments," said Shezi.

The incident happened just a month after Sphamandla Dlamini-Hlubi, a Grade 8 pupil, was accidentally shot and killed by a 15-year-old classmate at ZamaZulu Secondary in Imbali, near Pietermaritzburg.

KwaZulu-Natal MEC for education Ina Cronjé sent her condolences to the Mbeje family. "This is a very sad incident indeed. My condolences go to the Mbeje family, friends, educators and learners at Marian Ridge," she said.
