Residents of Tickeyline in Maake area, outside Tzaneen in Limpopo, have accused the municipality and the roads and transport department of failing to properly cover a water drainage system that they say poses a serious threat to local residents.
They said the open drainage system was not properly built and it floods the area, making it difficult for residents to reach the main road either in vehicles or on foot.
A local businessman, Lazman Manyama, said a woman was recently swept off by the overflow from the open drainage system water as she tried to cross from her home to the main road.
Manyama said they felt like they were under house arrest during heavy rainfalls as they could not cross the road.
He said most people who work in the Tzaneen central business district and at the Maake Plaza have problems with their employers when they don't turn up for work due to flooding.
Manyama told Sowetan that businesses in the area are also affected as they are not accessible during rainy days.
He said this has been going on for a long time.
"Our lives have been a living hell and residents are forced to make a detour to access the main road," Manyama said.
Mabakane Mangena, Tzaneen's municipal manager, said the matter will be dealt with by the relevant stakeholders.
