Limpopo police in Bolobedu, near Modjadjiskloof, have opened two inquest dockets after two people drowned during a baptism at Iketleng village on Sunday.

The two, an Apostolic church priest and a church member, were in the Molototsi River to baptise two other congregants.

According to a witness, Walter Semosa, the first of two people, went into the river with the priest, and was baptised. A woman managed to get out of the water without a problem.

"When a second person went into the water with the priest they both drowned."

Semosa said a search for the victims was launched and police divers found the bodies at about 6pm.

The deceased were identified as Jonas Mailula, 36, from Relela village, and Masale Hutamo, 38, of Mohlakamosoma village.

Captain Freddy Maenetja confirmed the incident and warned people to be cautious when in flooded rivers .
