Alligators safe for now

Alligators spend the winter resting in deep water-filled holes in soft mud, which they dig themselves. They were endangered because many were killed for food and fashion, but in the 1950s the US passed laws banning the killing of alligators. These laws worked so well that in some places there are too many alligators. In Florida people complain about having alligators in their gardens and swimming pools. Though they are no longer endangered, they still need to be protected.
