Athletics South Africa has announced that all entries for the prestigious Nedbank Johannesburg Marathon, which carries a total prize money of R500000, will be closed this Friday.

The event, which is expected to attract more than 4000 marathoners from across the country and the continent, will be held in Botanical Gardens, Emmerentia, on March 22.

The winners, in both categories, will pocket a cool R60000. Runners-up will be R30000 richer and third prize will be R20000.

It was a Lesotho affair last year when athletes from this country won the three medals in the men's section.

Thabo Ntlaloe won gold in the time of 2:20:09 seconds. Nkopano Seqhobane came second on 2:20:11 and Teboho Sello third on 2:20:19.

Zimbabwean Samukeliso Moyo took the women's laurels on 2:46:35. She was followed by South Africans Dimakatso Menong and Mboeholowo Sihadi.

Moyo, however, has decided not to compete this year as she is focusing for the Two Oceans ultra-marathon in Cape Town next month.

Race entries are available at Bedford Runner, Fourways Runner, Randburg Runner, the Sweatshop Dunkeld, Fourways and ASA offices in Johannesburg. In Pretoria, they are available at Varsity Sports, Run-a-Way Sport and Running Inn and also The Sweatshop in Southdown.

Entries can also be taken on line at www.nedbanksponsorships.co.za or www.enteronline.co.za and cost R65 for the marathon and R35 for the 10km race.
