KwaZulu-Natal turned into a political playground as the ANC and the IFP tried hard to woo voters, deploying its heavyweights ahead of next month's general election.

The ruling party traversed the province from KwaDukuza on the north coast to Umzimkhulu on the south coast at the weekend.

President Kgalema Motlanthe went to the back yard of Africa's first Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and former ANC president Chief Albert Luthuli in Groutville.

Other ANC NEC members Makhenkesi Stofile and Siphiwe Nyanda were deployed to Umsinga in the Natal Midlands - a former IFP stronghold.

IFP president Mangosuthu Buthelezi took the battle to ANC president Jacob Zuma's village in Inkandla and Umzumbe on the south coast.

In Umzumbe, Buthelezi vowed his party will not stand aloof while people suffered.

He said there was no better place to start than KwaZulu-Natal where they have the best chance to win on April 22.

Meanwhile, Motlanthe paid homage at Luthuli's grave and that of his wife Nokukhanya on Saturday and laid a wreath at the Groutville Congregational Church.
