The Uitenhage Schools Rugby Development Committee will stage the inaugural BK Top 8 knockout tournament in KwaNobuhle Jabavu Stadium, Port Elizabeth, from March 18.

Fumanekile Yamile, the committee's secretary, yesterday said the tournament is sponsored by Butityi Konki, boss of BK Investment Holdings, to the tune of R100 000.

Eight high school teams will take part in rugby and netball and the finals will be played on March 27 in Uitenhage. On the same day winners will be presented with prizes and later on the second edition of the schools rugby tournament will be launched.

The participants are Solomon Mahlangu, Molly Blackburn, Thanduxolo, Sisonke, Zanolwazi, Uitenhage, Mlungisi Perfector and Nkululeko.

Yamile has praised Konki for his wonderful initiative and also believes it has contributed largely to the improvement in school sport.

"The competition has assisted us in talent identification and has also played a major role in keeping the kids away from bad deeds," said Yamile, who urged other business people in the area to assist them financially. - Meshack Khotha
