The 2009 Selope Thema Games Against Crime, staged yearly in KwaThema, look set to be much bigger and more riveting after the organisers revealed that the total prize money has increased by R70000.

The total prize money for this year is R350000 for the tournament that is expected to attract 126 clubs from across the country who will compete in different sports.

It will run from March 28 until April 13 at the KwaThema Sports Complex, Ekurhuleni.

The tournament, which is in its fifth year, is being organised by the Youth Development Centre for Orphans (Yudeco).

Seth Twala, the games organiser, said in the football category they will have 42 clubs in the men's open section, 16 in the under-15s and a further 16 in the masters.

Sixteen teams will also participate in netball, 16 more in basketball for people with disabilities and 20 in boxing.

Twala, the former Jomo Cosmos spokesperson, yesterday also urged clubs to register before the March 13 deadline.

"The games are intended to mobilise young and old people during the Easter weekend to engage in recreational and sporting activities that will contribute towards a crime-free holiday period in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Region," Twala said.

The event is also staged in remembrance of struggle stalwart Selope RV Thema, who Kwa-Thema has been named after.
