A small group of strikers at the Durban University of Technology's Steve Biko Campus were forced off the premises by a private security company as they demanded that their colleagues who were attending lectures join them.

The strike, over lack of accommodation, entered its third day yesterday.

However, the students' demand yesterday changed to a call for the release of their leaders from jail before they can consider going back to lecturers.

Four members of the SA Students Congress-led SRC were denied bail on Monday after they were arrested following violence on the campus last week.

The university obtained an interdict last Friday restricting students from protesting on campus or damaging property after two staff members were held hostage.
